Saudi Coffee: Celebrating A National Symbol Of Heritage And Cultural Diversity

Saudi coffee is a vital agricultural product in the Kingdom, deeply embedded in its cultural and economic fabric. It symbolises Saudi Arabia's rich heritage and plays a crucial role in rural development, offering sustainable economic opportunities for farmers. The highlands of the southwestern and southern regions are ideal for coffee cultivation due to their unique climate and fertile soil, producing beans with a distinctive flavour.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has highlighted that regions like Jazan, Aseer, Al-Baha, Makkah, and Najran host over 1.3 million fruit-bearing coffee trees. These trees yield more than 870 tons of pure Saudi coffee annually. The ministry is committed to advancing the local coffee sector through targeted programs that empower farmers with modern agricultural technologies.

Each region in Saudi Arabia has its own traditional method of preparing coffee, showcasing the diversity of local customs. In the northern areas, dark roasted beans flavoured with cardamom are popular. Meanwhile, in the south, light roasted beans are enriched with ginger, saffron, cinnamon, and cloves. Central, eastern, and western regions prefer medium roasted beans blended with cardamom and saffron.

The ministry's initiatives aim to expand cultivation areas and enhance crop quality while strengthening supply chains. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to support the local coffee industry. By implementing these measures, the ministry seeks to ensure that Saudi coffee remains a significant contributor to the nation's economy.

In celebration of International Coffee Day on October 1st each year, the ministry reaffirms its dedication to developing the local coffee sector. This commitment includes empowering farmers through modern agricultural practices and expanding cultivation areas. Such initiatives are designed to improve crop quality and bolster supply chains.
