Saudi Cinema's Role In Cultural Exchange Positions Kingdom As A Global Hub For Creativity
Prince Turki bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz recently highlighted the vital role of cinema in fostering cultural exchange during the Saudi Film Confex in Riyadh. He stressed how films serve as a bridge, introducing Saudi culture to the world and vice versa. Reflecting on the past, he mentioned that television began showcasing films in Saudi Arabia 50 years ago, significantly impacting cultural awareness.
The event was attended by notable figures such as Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture and board chairman of the Film Commission, and Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Qahtani, chief executive of the Film Commission. They were joined by a diverse group of artists and producers from Saudi Arabia, the Arab world, and internationally. Prince Turki shared his personal journey in film production, noting his involvement in creating a film about Ibn Battuta nearly two decades ago.

Prince Turki recounted that this semi-documentary was funded by Saudi resources and involved an international team from Britain and the United States. The same year saw another significant project about Hajj, supported by several Saudi businessmen. These films successfully reached cinemas worldwide, showcasing Saudi contributions to global culture.
Among Prince Turki's favourites is "Born a King," which portrays King Faisal's first diplomatic mission at age 13. This film stands out for its authentic depiction of Saudi history and culture, with most scenes shot within the Kingdom. It featured local actors and involved Saudis in its production process. Prince Turki's admiration for this film stems from its portrayal of King Faisal and his dedication to accurately representing Saudi heritage.
He praised King Abdulaziz’s legacy, suggesting it deserves numerous narrative films to highlight his sacrifices alongside other influential figures who shaped Saudi Arabia. Prince Turki encouraged writers and filmmakers to explore these rich historical themes further.
Support for Creative Endeavours
Prince Turki emphasized that a film's success begins with a compelling idea that requires funding to become reality. He acknowledged the Kingdom’s leadership for providing substantial support to filmmakers through financial resources. This backing opens new opportunities for creativity within the industry.
He urged producers not to focus solely on profit but also contribute positively to society through their artistic efforts. Prince Turki expressed optimism about Saudi cinema's potential to become a global creative hub due to recent advancements in filmmaking, acting, and cultural representation.
In addition to cinema, he commended progress in theatre, opera, and orchestra performances involving Saudi musicians abroad. These developments reflect the Kingdom's growing influence in various cultural arenas worldwide.
