Al-Maqmaa: Celebrating Aseer Region's Copper-Adorned War Heritage And Craftsmanship

In Al-Namas, Aseer Region, the tradition of crafting traditional weapons like 'Al-Maqmaa' remains vibrant. These weapons, once vital for defense and cultural events, are crafted with precision. The process starts with selecting quality wood for the body and forging an iron barrel. Essential parts like 'Al-safha' for gunpowder storage and 'darrab' for compacting powder are assembled meticulously.

Fahd Al-Shehri continues a legacy passed down by his father, who established one of the first Al-Maqmaa repair shops in Al-Namas in 1397 AH. His father modernized the craft using advanced tools while maintaining its essence. Fahd now adapts these weapons to suit modern tastes, creating lighter versions that appeal to younger generations proud of their heritage.

Al-Maqmaa: A Cultural Heritage of Aseer

The embellishment phase is where artisans transform each weapon into a piece of art. They use brass, silver, and intricate engravings to decorate them. This meticulous decoration process highlights the weapon's cultural significance as a heritage art form.

In Aseer, traditional celebrations are incomplete without Al-Maqmaa and the 'zahab,' a leather belt with metal studs worn across the body. This belt holds gunpowder cartridges used to ignite the weapon during festivities, adding to the event's authenticity and cultural richness.

Complementing this craft is the production of traditional black powder. This demanding discipline involves mixing salt from specialized soils, naturally occurring sulfur, and charcoal from slow-burning tree branches. The mixture is dried to create an explosive compound used historically in rock blasting and well excavation.

Symbolic Significance in Aseer Region

Researcher Dr. Saleh Abu Arad highlighted Al-Maqmaa's importance in Aseer's social and cultural fabric. He stated that it remains a symbol of heritage passed through generations, representing an authentic expression of the region’s identity.

This craft not only preserves history but also adapts to contemporary needs, ensuring its relevance in today's society while celebrating Aseer's rich cultural legacy.
