Saudi Border Guard Celebrates 115 Years Of Commitment To National Security And Community Service

The Saudi Border Guard has been a crucial part of the Kingdom's defence since King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud unified the nation. This legacy of security and prosperity continues under King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Border Guard's history began 115 years ago at Al-Uqair Port in Al-Ahsa Province, where small boats and camel patrols safeguarded the coasts.

In 1344 AH, Jeddah saw the establishment of the first formal coastal surveillance entity, named "Coastal Guard Authority." It relied on basic methods like foot patrols, camel rides in deserts, and traditional maritime vessels to monitor waters and prevent smuggling. By 1347 AH, operations in Jeddah were unified under the "Coastal Guard Authority of Jeddah," enhancing coastal protection.

115 Years of Saudi Border Guard Legacy

A significant reorganisation took place in 1350 AH when all border security entities merged into the "Coastal and Port Guard Authority." This consolidation marked a pivotal moment for border and port defence. By 1355 AH, operations expanded to cover both land and maritime borders more effectively. A Coastal Guard Authority was also established in the Eastern Region to bolster security efforts.

In 1383 AH, authorities from the Eastern and Western Regions were unified under the "General Directorate of Border and Coastal Guard and Ports," forming a single sector within the Ministry of Interior. The Border Guard took on additional roles like combating smuggling, protecting infrastructure, and participating in search and rescue missions. The Border Security Law of 1394 AH further expanded its responsibilities.

The name changed to "General Directorate of Border Guard" in 1414 AH, reflecting its historical significance and ongoing contributions to national development. Today, it remains a key part of the Ministry of Interior's efforts to secure Saudi Arabia's borders using advanced technologies like the Zali electronic surveillance system and Dahna land vehicle.

Modern Advancements in Border Security

The General Directorate of Border Guard is now a model for securing Saudi Arabia’s borders with cutting-edge technology. Supported by skilled personnel, it plays a vital role in national progress and community service. Its use of world-class systems underscores its commitment to safeguarding national interests while adapting to modern security challenges.

This enduring institution continues to protect Saudi Arabia's land and maritime borders effectively. Its rich history is a testament to its dedication to national security, ensuring that residents enjoy safety and prosperity throughout different eras.
