Saudi Architecture Characters Map Launched By HRH Crown Prince To Enhance Urban Heritage

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has introduced the Saudi Architecture Characters Map. This initiative showcases 19 unique architectural styles inspired by the Kingdom’s diverse geography and culture. It underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to preserving its architectural heritage while modernising urban landscapes as part of Vision 2030.

The Saudi Architecture Characters Map draws from urban and historical studies of building traditions passed down through generations. The styles include Central Najdi, Northern Najdi, Tabuk Coast, Madinah Rural, Inner Madinah, Hejazi Coast, Taif Highlands, Sarawat Mountains, Aseer Escarpment, Tuhama Foothills, Tuhama Coast, Farasan Islands, Abha Highlands, Bisha Desert, Najran, Al Ahsa Oasis, Al Qatif Oasis, East Coast and Eastern Najdi.

Crown Prince Launches Saudi Architecture Map

HRH the Crown Prince stressed that Saudi Architecture mirrors the Kingdom's cultural and geographical diversity. He highlighted the significance of sustainable urban planning that aligns with local environments while integrating traditional elements into modern designs. "Saudi Architecture blends our rich heritage with contemporary design thinking," he noted.

Efforts to implement Saudi Architecture are supported by collaborations among government agencies, engineering firms and real estate developers. Architectural design studios will aid engineers and designers through guidelines, workshops and skill development programs to ensure sustainability and quality standards are met.

Saudi Architecture aims to enrich urban architectural diversity in the Kingdom and empower local talent. By 2030, it is expected to contribute over SAR8 billion to the Kingdom’s GDP and create more than 34,000 direct and indirect jobs across engineering, construction and urban development sectors.

"Saudi Architecture will indirectly contribute to economic growth by making our cities more attractive to visitors and tourists," HRH the Crown Prince stated. This initiative is anticipated to stimulate sectors such as tourism, hospitality and construction while envisioning thriving cities and communities.

Phased Implementation Strategy

The implementation of Saudi Architecture will occur in phases. Initially focusing on Al-Ahsa, Taif, Makkah and Abha, early applications will target major projects like government buildings and commercial structures. This phased approach ensures a smooth transition into adopting these new architectural styles.

Designed with flexibility in mind, Saudi Architecture provides developers with guidelines that allow for modern building materials without imposing extra financial burdens. Each of the 19 styles offers three design typographies: traditional, transitional and contemporary – encouraging creative expression while preserving local authenticity.

This model serves as a global source of inspiration for innovation in architectural design. It enhances urban landscapes while balancing past traditions with present needs. The initiative reflects a commitment to improving quality of life through thoughtful integration of heritage into modern cityscapes.
