Saudi Aramco And Pasqal Launch First Quantum Computer In The Kingdom For Industrial Applications

Saudi Aramco, a prominent energy and chemicals company, has partnered with Pasqal to introduce the first quantum computer in Saudi Arabia. This marks a significant achievement in the Middle East's tech landscape. Located at Aramco’s Dhahran data centre, this quantum computer is dedicated to industrial applications. This initiative aims to boost regional expertise and advance quantum applications in energy, materials, and industry sectors across the Kingdom and the Middle East.

The collaboration aligns with Aramco’s strategy of using advanced digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and foster innovation. It also supports Pasqal’s mission to provide practical quantum solutions globally. Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Aramco's Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation, emphasised that Aramco is pioneering technology by developing advanced digital solutions. He highlighted that deploying AI and other technologies enhances operations, maximises efficiency, and adds value.

First Quantum Computer Launched in the Kingdom

Pasqal CEO Loïc Henriet described the partnership as a historic milestone for quantum technologies in the Middle East. He noted that using their most powerful quantum computer represents a defining moment for the region's technological future. Pasqal continues expanding its practical quantum computing capabilities to serve industrial needs effectively.

Wa’ed Ventures, part of Aramco’s venture capital program, invested in Pasqal in January 2023. This investment made Wa’ed Ventures one of Pasqal’s earliest strategic investors. Since then, Wa’ed Ventures has supported Pasqal in localising its technologies within Saudi Arabia. This effort helps build a robust presence and contributes to developing a regional quantum-technology ecosystem.

Pasqal’s system at Aramco can control 200 qubits arranged in programmable two-dimensional arrays. This setup provides an ideal platform for exploring advanced quantum algorithms and real-world industrial applications. The partnership also includes training programs and joint research opportunities for Saudi engineers and scientists.

These initiatives aim to strengthen Saudi Arabia's quantum ecosystem while developing highly skilled technical talent within the Kingdom. The collaboration between Aramco and Pasqal signifies a pivotal step towards harnessing new computing domains' potential benefits for industrial advancement in the region.
