Saudi Aramco Executives Highlight Artificial Intelligence's Role In Materials Science And Corrosion Solutions

Saudi Aramco leaders highlighted the significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming materials science and engineering. They focused on tackling global metal corrosion issues and speeding up the creation of new materials on an industrial scale. These insights were shared at the 19th Middle East Corrosion Conference and Exhibition in Dhahran, which gathered international experts to discuss solutions for corrosion, a problem costing the global economy about $3 trillion annually.

Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation, stated that AI-driven solutions could greatly cut down the global cost of corrosion. This issue accounts for nearly 3% of the world's GDP. He mentioned that using AI and new technologies could save around $1 trillion each year in this field.

AI's Role in Materials Science and Corrosion

The conference is a key event for corrosion science, being held in Saudi Arabia for the first time. It is the largest gathering since its start in 1979, with over 5,200 participants from 45 countries. The event features more than 300 research papers and 25 specialized workshops.

In his opening speech, Wail Al Jaafari, Executive Vice President of Technical Services at Aramco, emphasized that managing corrosion goes beyond technical concerns. It is a strategic priority linked to operational reliability, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Aramco announced 28 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) during the conference. These agreements are valued at over $1 billion and include collaborations in advanced materials research and development, technology innovation, local manufacturing, and training initiatives.

Innovative Approaches to Corrosion

This year's conference also introduced a hackathon focused on innovation in corrosion and materials science. More than 1,500 students participated in this first-ever event aimed at fostering new ideas and solutions.

The Middle East Corrosion Conference and Exhibition remains a prestigious platform for discussing advancements in corrosion science. It continues to attract experts worldwide to share knowledge and explore collaborative opportunities.
