Majdi Al-Harbi Becomes First Saudi Elected To UN Group Of Experts On Geographical Names

Majdi Al-Harbi, Executive Director for Geographical Names at the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), has been appointed as a member and rapporteur of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). This appointment is notable as Al-Harbi is the first Saudi and Arab to join the UNGEGN bureau. His election highlights Saudi Arabia's expanding role in international geographical naming efforts.

The Kingdom's leadership in geospatial innovation has positioned it prominently in global performance metrics. During the 2025 UNGEGN session, held from April 28 to May 2 in New York, Saudi Arabia showcased its strategy for the Arab Division of Experts on Geographical Names. This included a work program and a framework for creating a unified Arabic Romanization system.

Al-Harbi Elected to UN Geographical Names Group

Saudi Arabia shared its experiences with geographical name standards, adoption methods, and recent advancements in management and standardization. The presentation highlighted how geographical names help preserve national heritage and cultural landmarks. It also emphasized integrating modern technologies and artificial intelligence to support these standardization efforts.

The Kingdom actively participated in the Virtual Exhibition accompanying the session by contributing scientific posters and digital displays. These contributions underscored Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing geographical naming practices through innovative approaches.

During the session, UN experts examined reports from member states, assessing progress in standardizing geographical names. They explored ways to integrate these names with emerging technologies. Discussions also addressed how organizations can link geographical names with sustainable development goals, emphasizing their broader significance.

The Saudi delegation was led by Mohammed Alsayel, President of GEOSA and President of the National Committee on Geographical Names. The team included representatives from various government agencies, reflecting a coordinated national effort in this field.

Al-Harbi's appointment signifies recognition of his active involvement within the Saudi delegation at the UNGEGN session. His election also highlights Saudi Arabia's increasing contribution to regional and international cooperation regarding geographical names.
