Saudi Arabia Observes World Migratory Bird Day To Highlight Habitat Preservation Efforts

World Migratory Bird Day is observed globally, including in Saudi Arabia, on the second Saturday of May. This event aims to increase awareness about the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. It also highlights the threats these birds face and their environmental importance. This year's theme, "Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities," focuses on integrating migratory birds into urban planning to reduce environmental threats.

The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) represents Saudi Arabia in efforts to protect wildlife, including migratory birds, which are vital for biodiversity. These efforts involve regulating hunting and enforcing strict laws aligned with approved environmental regulations. The NCW coordinates with relevant authorities to ensure biodiversity sustainability.

Saudi Arabia Marks World Migratory Bird Day

Saudi Arabia has streamlined hunting season procedures through the Fitri platform. This initiative helps regulate hunting activities, ensuring they align with conservation goals. The NCW conducts field surveys and monitors migration routes to update the national bird list and determine each species' status.

Additionally, the NCW studies biodiversity hotspots and wetlands, supporting environmental monitoring and research programs across coastal and wilderness regions. These efforts aim to preserve Saudi Arabia's natural environment, a crucial stop along global migratory bird routes.

A total of 499 bird species have been recorded in Saudi Arabia, representing 67 families. Of these, 223 are breeding species. The number of waterbird species is estimated at approximately 180. These figures highlight the rich avian diversity within the Kingdom.

Through its comprehensive initiatives, Saudi Arabia seeks to integrate migratory birds into urban settings while reducing threats they encounter in cities. By doing so, the Kingdom aims to create bird-friendly communities that support both human and avian populations.
