Saudi Arabia Advocates For Fair Climate Financing At Human Rights Council Meeting

Saudi Arabia has highlighted the critical need for full implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. The Kingdom urged developed nations to fulfil their international obligations, especially in financing climate initiatives and enhancing capacities in developing countries. This call was made during a Human Rights Council panel on climate change's impact on human rights.

Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered this message alongside 62 other countries. He expressed concern over the ongoing shortfall in climate financing, warning that it hampers developing nations' ability to protect human rights and adapt to climate challenges effectively.

Bin Khothaila stressed that inadequate climate financing undermines efforts to safeguard human rights. He noted that the adverse effects of climate change continue to threaten these rights, particularly in developing countries and among vulnerable populations. The ambassador called for urgent action to address this financing gap.

The Kingdom emphasised the importance of fully implementing international climate agreements as essential for sustainable development. These frameworks are seen as crucial for eradicating poverty and hunger while strengthening community resilience against climate impacts.

Saudi Arabia reiterated its commitment to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. This principle is a cornerstone of international climate cooperation, urging developed countries to lead in emission reductions while supporting developing nations with financial, technical, and capacity-building assistance.

Bin Khothaila concluded by highlighting that nationally determined contributions are vital for fair transition pathways. He stressed that these pathways should consider national circumstances and equity principles without imposing rigid frameworks that ignore unique social and economic conditions.

The Kingdom's stance underscores its dedication to fostering international collaboration in addressing climate change challenges while ensuring equitable solutions tailored to individual country needs.
