Saudi Arabia Advocates For Stronger Cybersecurity Measures At UN Security Council

The National Cybersecurity Authority recently participated in a high-level open debate on "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Addressing Evolving Threats in Cyberspace" at the United Nations Security Council. The debate included UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, senior officials, and representatives from UN member states. Saudi Arabia's delegation was led by Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohamed Al-Wasel, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the UN.

The discussion aimed to enhance understanding of cybersecurity issues and reinforce the UN Security Council's role in addressing cyber threats. It highlighted that malicious activities in cyberspace could undermine international peace and security. Saudi Arabia emphasized the need for a secure and reliable cyberspace to support growth and prosperity, noting that improving cybersecurity is crucial for safeguarding national interests and security.

Saudi Arabia expressed its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in cybersecurity. The Kingdom praised the Global Cybersecurity Forum, a platform that gathers decision-makers to discuss strategic cybersecurity issues. The previous forum edition saw participation from representatives of over 120 countries.

The Kingdom established the Global Cybersecurity Forum Foundation in Riyadh to contribute to international efforts in enforcing cybersecurity, cooperation, and economic and social development within the field. This initiative aligns with global cybersecurity endeavors aimed at promoting prosperity and well-being worldwide while enhancing human capabilities in various countries and organizations.

Saudi Arabia has organized cyber exercises involving more than 40 countries and organizations, reaffirming its dedication to regional cooperation in cybersecurity. As a result of these efforts, a specialized ministerial committee for cybersecurity was established under the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Additionally, the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers was formed under the League of Arab States, both based on proposals by Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom's initiatives underscore its proactive approach to addressing evolving cyber threats and fostering international collaboration. By participating in high-level debates and organizing forums and exercises, Saudi Arabia aims to create a secure cyberspace environment conducive to global growth and stability.
