Saudi Arabia And UK Collaborate To Enhance Yemen’s Maritime Security Through International Partnership

Riyadh recently hosted a significant international conference, co-organised by Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, with representatives from over 35 countries. The event marked the launch of the international Yemen Maritime Security Partnership, aimed at bolstering security in crucial maritime routes. This initiative seeks to combat smuggling, piracy, and human trafficking in Yemen's waterways, enhancing regional stability and protecting global trade routes.

The conference saw commitments of millions of dollars in initial funding to rebuild Yemen's Coast Guard capabilities. This funding will support training, equipment provision, and institutional development as part of a comprehensive ten-year strategy. The partnership underscores the strategic importance of the Red Sea region on both regional and international levels.

Saudi Arabia and UK Strengthen Yemen’s Maritime Security

Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al Jaber highlighted the Kingdom's dedication to securing this vital area and ensuring freedom of navigation. He described it as a crucial artery for global trade and a central hub connecting people worldwide. The Kingdom is committed to supporting Yemen across political, economic, developmental, and humanitarian fields.

Over past decades, Saudi Arabia has provided extensive assistance to Yemen through various entities. This includes budgetary support for the Yemeni government, aid to the Central Bank of Yemen, and implementing 265 development projects through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen across eight sectors.

The Kingdom has also focused on capacity-building for Yemeni institutions. Initiatives supporting the Yemeni Coast Guard have amounted to $55,641,252. Ambassador Al Jaber emphasised the pivotal role of the Coast Guard in combating smuggling and maritime threats. To further enhance its capacity, Saudi Arabia announced an additional $4 million in support.

The UK Ambassador to Yemen Abda Sharif affirmed her country's commitment to supporting both the Yemeni Coast Guard and government. She expressed gratitude towards Saudi Arabia for its continued assistance. Today's pledges reflect broad international support for Yemen.

Coordinating International Support

A dedicated secretariat will be established under this partnership, managed through TAFFY (technical assistance fund for Yemen). This will coordinate international support and ensure resources reach their intended destinations. The UK's involvement highlights its commitment to strengthening global security partnerships.

The Yemeni Coast Guard will benefit from enhanced capacity in securing maritime borders. This will improve security and economic opportunities for coastal communities while safeguarding one of the world's most vital waterways.

Building on historic ties between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Riyadh continues to diligently support Yemeni government efforts towards stability and prosperity. These efforts aim to fulfil aspirations of Yemeni people by enhancing efficiency across various sectors.
