Saudi Arabia Emerges As A Leading Player In Global Energy Storage Market

Saudi Arabia has secured a prominent position among the top ten global markets for battery energy storage. This achievement coincides with the launch of the Bisha Project, boasting a capacity of 2000 MWh, making it one of the largest in the Middle East and Africa. The Kingdom's National Renewable Energy Program, managed by the Ministry of Energy, aims to reach a storage capacity of 48 gigawatt-hours by 2030.

The Kingdom has already tendered 26 gigawatt-hours of storage projects, which are at various stages of development. These initiatives are crucial for expanding renewable energy, supporting the national energy mix targets. By 2030, Saudi Arabia aims for renewables to generate 50% of its total electricity production. This aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to increase electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Saudi Arabia's Rise in Energy Storage Market

According to Wood Mackenzie consultancy, Saudi Arabia leads emerging markets experiencing rapid growth in energy storage projects. The new storage capacities are expected to further solidify its position among the top ten global markets over the next decade. The Kingdom plans to operate 8 GWh of energy storage projects by 2025 and 22 GWh by 2026.

The Bisha battery energy storage project recently became operational with 488 advanced battery containers. It offers a storage capacity of 500 MW for four hours. This project allows battery charging during low-demand periods and discharging during peak times. It ensures backup power availability when needed, enhancing electricity supply management flexibility and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

Saudi Arabia is set to become the third-largest global market in energy storage projects after China and the United States based on announced capacities. By the end of 2024, renewable energy projects across all development stages reached a total capacity of 44.1 GW. Energy storage is vital for improving electricity supply reliability and enhancing the National Grid's ability to handle emergencies.

Strategic Objectives

The transformation within Saudi Arabia's energy sector strengthens its leadership in producing and exporting diverse energy types. Energy storage plays a key role in achieving strategic objectives for advancing the Kingdom's energy sector. This progress supports smart solutions for a more sustainable future while ensuring backup power availability when necessary.
