Saudi Arabia Advances Sustainable Mining Future With Innovative Green Initiatives

Saudi Arabia is transforming its mining sector to boost economic diversification while ensuring environmental sustainability. The Kingdom aims to become a global hub for mining and minerals by balancing resource extraction with eco-friendly practices. The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources is leading initiatives to promote responsible mining across the value chain, focusing on environmental preservation.

Efforts are underway to enhance sustainability in mining projects, conserve water, develop vegetation cover, and reduce emissions. A key part of this strategy is rehabilitating mining sites. For instance, the Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) launched a project in 2013 at Al-Jalamid Phosphate Mine to reclaim lands and plant over three million native trees suited to local conditions.

This initiative has created a thriving nature reserve that protects soil from erosion and provides food for wildlife. Maaden is also incorporating renewable energy into its operations. A 6-megawatt solar power plant was developed to power the Mansourah-Massarah gold mine, reducing the carbon footprint of its activities.

The ministry is actively pursuing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies at selected sites to cut emissions further. The Waad Al-Shamal power plant exemplifies this effort by integrating solar combined cycle systems with efficient gas-fired technologies. This approach helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions and aligns with Saudi Arabia's climate goals.

Increasing green spaces within mining complexes is another crucial step toward sustainability. The ministry has overseen afforestation projects, planting 130,000 trees in various complexes—30,000 in Al-Urma and 100,000 in Al-Samman—to improve local climates and strengthen environmental sustainability.

Renewable Energy Integration

Maaden's integration of renewable energy sources highlights the Kingdom's commitment to diversifying its energy mix. By developing solar power plants for its mines, Maaden significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuels. This shift not only lowers emissions but also supports broader environmental goals within the industry.

The strategic approach adopted by Saudi Arabia's mining sector ensures that natural resources are exploited responsibly while prioritising ecological preservation. These efforts aim to establish a sustainable future for mining operations and position the Kingdom as a leader in environmentally conscious mineral extraction.
