Saudi Arabia Advocates For Outer Space Sustainability To Enhance Human Well-being And Rights

Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Geneva, highlighted the critical issue of space debris and its potential impact on human rights. He stressed that understanding the sustainability of outer space is vital for maintaining the benefits of space technology in enhancing human welfare.

In his address at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), representing 123 countries, Ambassador Khothaila noted the significant advantages space technology provides. These include improvements in global communications, weather forecasting, and disaster management, all of which are essential for safeguarding fundamental human rights.

Saudi Arabia Promotes Space Sustainability Initiatives

The ambassador pointed out that space debris poses substantial risks to infrastructure supporting these operations. This threat could impede efforts to protect and promote human rights. He also mentioned that space debris directly affects several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Effective management of space debris is crucial for sustainable development. It ensures continued access to vital technologies that aid in weather monitoring, disaster response, and urban planning. The ambassador underscored this point during his speech.

The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) also emphasized managing space debris as essential for safe outer space operations. They highlighted its importance for international security, environmental protection, and satellite services contributing to human rights and development.

These organizations affirmed that addressing space debris is necessary for ensuring safety in outer space activities. It plays a significant role in maintaining international security and protecting the environment while supporting satellite services crucial for development.

The ambassador's remarks underscore the interconnectedness between managing space debris and achieving sustainable development goals. By addressing this issue, we can ensure continued access to technologies that support critical areas like urban planning and disaster response.
