SDAIA Boosts Five Saudi Cities In 2024 IMD Smart City Index, Signifying Digital Progress

The recent unveiling of the 2024 IMD Smart City Index has marked a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia, showcasing the nation's commitment to digital transformation within its urban centers. Spearheaded by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in partnership with various government bodies, this initiative has seen five Saudi cities ascend in the rankings, reflecting the Kingdom's progressive strides towards becoming a leading hub for smart city development.

Al-Khobar made its debut on the index this year, joining the ranks of Riyadh, Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah. Notably, Riyadh retained its position as the third among Arab cities, demonstrating its ongoing leadership in the region's smart city evolution. Makkah held steady at fifth place, while Jeddah climbed to 55th globally, up one spot from last year. Madinah made an impressive leap, advancing 11 places to secure the 74th position. Al-Khobar's entry at 99th out of 142 cities worldwide underscores the Kingdom's broadening influence in the smart city domain.

Saudi Cities Climb in Smart City Index

The IMD Smart City Index evaluates cities based on several critical factors, including residents' awareness of smart city initiatives, the equilibrium between economic and technological advancements with human considerations, and the alignment of these efforts with the community's aspirations and contemporary trends in urban development. A key focus is placed on employing digital technologies to optimize resource use, minimize carbon emissions, and enhance public spaces to meet the needs of the population more effectively.

SDAIA's leadership has been instrumental in elevating Saudi cities on this prestigious index through a series of projects aimed at fostering smart city concepts. Among these initiatives is the development of a national platform for smart cities. This platform leverages advanced analytics and simulation models powered by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to inform planning and future urban strategies. It features real-time operational indicators for monitoring essential sectors in Riyadh, contributing to sustainable urban development and improved quality of life.

In addition to these efforts, an innovative tool is being developed for detecting visual deformities in Riyadh using AI techniques. Cameras installed throughout the city capture data which is then analyzed weekly to identify any visual inconsistencies. This pilot project is set to expand to four other cities within the Kingdom, focusing on priority areas to enhance planning processes and overall living standards through cutting-edge technological solutions.

This advancement of Saudi cities in the IMD Smart City Index not only highlights the Kingdom's dedication to integrating digital technologies into urban management but also positions Saudi Arabia as a forward-thinking player in global smart city development. The collaborative efforts led by SDAIA and its government partners are paving a path towards more sustainable, efficient, and livable cities for their residents.
