Saudi Arabia Implements Smart Agriculture To Transform Desert Into Productive Farmland
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is advancing modern agriculture across Saudi Arabia. This initiative aims to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and protect water and natural resources. By implementing smart agricultural technologies, the ministry is transforming the desert landscape into a hub for agricultural innovation.
High-tech greenhouses are pivotal in this transformation. These facilities employ advanced climate control, irrigation, and fertilization systems. Tomato yields in these greenhouses have reached 99 kilograms per square meter, using only three liters of water per kilogram. This efficiency surpasses traditional farming methods significantly.

Hydroponics is a key technology in this strategy, saving up to 90% of water compared to conventional farming. The National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah) has conducted pilot projects demonstrating these water savings while producing high-quality vegetables for both local and international markets.
Vertical farming also plays a crucial role by enabling high-quality production in limited spaces. This method drastically reduces pesticide use, ensuring safer food production. These innovative techniques are creating new opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs in the Kingdom.
The ministry's strategic shift focuses on adopting high-impact technologies to enhance agricultural productivity while conserving resources. This approach aligns with the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to promote sustainable development across the Middle East.
Recently, the ministry laid the foundation stone for a smart agriculture project in Riyadh. This project is a tangible step towards promoting agricultural innovation and contributing to food security in the region.
Reducing Environmental Impact
Modern agriculture is essential for providing safe and healthy food while minimizing chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It also helps mitigate climate change effects on crops, ensuring sustainable food production for future generations.
The adoption of techniques like aquaponics and vertical farming is reducing water consumption and maximizing resource efficiency. These methods are turning the desert into fertile ground for agricultural advancements.
This comprehensive strategy encourages widespread adoption of modern technologies as a vital pillar for enhancing productivity and sustaining natural resources in Saudi Arabia.
