Saudi Arabia Signs International Initiative To Enhance Early Warning Systems For Sand And Dust Storms

The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has signed an agreement in Geneva to join the International Initiative for Early Warning of Sand and Dust Storms. This collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) took place during the Extraordinary World Meteorological Congress. Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, CEO of NCM and the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, attended the signing alongside WMO Secretary-General Professor Celeste Saulo.

The agreement aims to enhance global and regional capabilities in monitoring and forecasting sand and dust storms. It also focuses on developing early warning systems, especially in regions most affected by these weather events. This initiative is expected to protect lives and property while supporting sustainable development efforts.

Saudi Arabia Signs Sand Storm Warning Initiative

Saudi Arabia's participation in this agreement builds on its national initiatives in this field. The country has established the Regional Center for Sand and Dust Storms, which is officially recognized by the WMO as a regional reference center. This center is one of only four globally and focuses on improving monitoring, research, and forecasting capabilities across the Middle East and North Africa.

The center also aims to foster international cooperation to reduce the environmental, health, and economic impacts of sand and dust storms. Dr. Ghulam highlighted that this agreement is a practical step towards implementing initiatives launched by Saudi Arabia during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The Kingdom's approach involves turning international commitments into tangible achievements that advance global climate action, protect the environment, and support sustainable development. The Extraordinary World Meteorological Congress brings together experts and decision-makers worldwide to enhance international cooperation in meteorology, climate, and early warning systems.

This congress serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and strategies to address global challenges related to weather phenomena. By participating in such initiatives, Saudi Arabia continues to play a significant role in promoting environmental sustainability on a global scale.
