Saudi Defense Ministry Acquires Four Airbus A330 MRTTs To Strengthen Air Force
The Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Airbus Defense and Space to acquire four A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft. This move aims to enhance the Royal Saudi Air Force's (RSAF) operational capabilities. The agreement was endorsed by Dr. Khaled bin Hussein Al-Bayari, Assistant Minister of Defense for Executive Affairs, and Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defense and Space.
Dr. Al-Bayari highlighted that these new aircraft will significantly improve the RSAF's air-to-air refueling and transport missions. Additionally, they will bolster the Ministry of Defense's capacity in troop and equipment transport operations. This enhancement is expected to strengthen the Kingdom's overall defense capabilities.

Jean-Brice Dumont emphasized the global standing of the A330 MRTT, stating, "The A330 MRTT is the most capable new-generation tanker and transport aircraft globally." He noted that it holds a 90% market share outside the USA and has received 82 orders from 15 countries. This contract marks Saudi Arabia's third acquisition of the A330 MRTT, solidifying RSAF's position as one of the largest MRTT operators worldwide.
The agreement includes an Industrial Participation (IP) component aimed at developing Saudi Arabia's aviation industry. This initiative involves establishing local manufacturing capabilities and nurturing talent in aircraft engineering, development, and repair. It also focuses on enhancing safety, quality, and supply chains within the country.
Additionally, the agreement facilitates technology transfer and expertise sharing related to the RSAF A330 MRTT with local companies. SAAMS, a joint venture between SAMI (Saudi Arabian Military Industries) and Airbus, will play a crucial role in these industrial localization efforts. This aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goal to localize over 50% of military spending by 2030.
Commitment to Advancing Defense Industries
Earlier this year, the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) signed an IP agreement with Airbus Defense and Space. This agreement aims to localize the multi-role refueling aircraft industry and its constituent systems while ensuring compliance with global specifications and standards. This strategic move underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing its defense industries and localizing military equipment and services.
This contract not only enhances RSAF’s operational capabilities but also supports Saudi Arabia’s broader goals under Vision 2030. By focusing on industrial participation and localization, it aims to build a robust aviation industry within the Kingdom.
The collaboration between SAMI and Airbus through SAAMS is pivotal in achieving these objectives. It ensures that local companies benefit from technology transfer and expertise sharing, thereby fostering growth in Saudi Arabia’s defense sector.
This initiative represents a significant step towards self-reliance in military capabilities for Saudi Arabia. By investing in advanced technologies like the A330 MRTT, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a leader in regional defense.
The Ministry of Defense’s decision to acquire these aircraft reflects its strategic vision for enhancing national security through advanced technological investments. The focus on industrial participation further demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development within the defense sector.
