Saudi Arabia Showcases Sustainable Energy Initiatives At World Energy Congress
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently marked its presence at the 26th World Energy Congress (WEC), which took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from April 22 to 25. This significant event, focusing on the evolving landscape of the energy sector, emphasized the importance of managing these changes in a manner that is both fair and sustainable. Saudi Arabia's participation was highlighted by its pavilion themed "Sustainable Energy -- A Shared Future," which stood out as the largest private pavilion at the exhibition.
At the heart of the Saudi pavilion were the national programs and initiatives stemming from Saudi Vision 2030. The pavilion served as a platform for 22 government and private entities to engage with attendees through interactive presentations. These presentations detailed the Kingdom's proactive measures in response to the global shifts in energy production and consumption, alongside its committed efforts to mitigate climate change impacts.

Throughout the congress, the Saudi pavilion hosted 33 discussion panels that delved into the Kingdom’s strategies for developing its clean energy sectors. Notably, these discussions covered the National Renewable Energy Program and the Optimal Energy Mix Program, both of which target increasing renewable energy's contribution to electricity production to 50% by 2030.
Additionally, the pavilion showcased initiatives under the Saudi Green Initiative, aligning with the Kingdom's ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 or sooner, contingent on the availability and maturity of necessary technologies. This objective includes plans to cut emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030 and introduces the Kingdom’s role in the Green Middle East Initiative, aimed at fostering regional collaboration to combat climate change.
In a significant announcement made at the event, it was revealed that Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy has been nominated by the World Energy Council (WEC) to host the upcoming 27th edition of the World Energy Congress. This prestigious gathering is set to take place in Riyadh from October 26 to 29, 2026. The WEC, with its membership exceeding 70 countries, represents over 3,000 entities within the global energy system, underscoring the importance of this future event in promoting sustainable energy development worldwide.
