Saudi Arabia Experiences A 20-Year Low In May Dust And Sandstorms
In an environmental development, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a significant reduction in the incidence of dust and sand storms across various regions. Last month, reports from the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center highlighted an 80% drop in storm rates, marking the lowest frequency for the month of May in two decades. This substantial decrease has been observed predominantly in the central and eastern regions of the kingdom.
Jamaan Al-Qahtani, the Executive Vice President of the National Meteor Center for Meteorological Affairs and Executive Director of the Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, shared detailed insights into the decrease. The central and eastern regions experienced an 80% reduction, while more dramatic drops were reported in specific areas: the Qassim and Northern Border regions saw a 100% decrease, Riyadh recorded a 95% decrease, Al-Ahsa noted an 86% decrease, and both Al-Qassim and Arar witnessed a complete 100% reduction in dust storm occurrences.
Al-Qahtani credited this notable achievement to the Kingdom's dedicated environmental preservation initiatives. These efforts are aligned with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aiming not only to mitigate the impacts of dust and sand storms but also to foster environmental sustainability for the welfare of current and future generations.
The Kingdom's proactive stance in combating environmental challenges reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens and ensuring the health of its natural landscapes. The Sand and Dust Storm Warning Regional Center, a pivotal institution in this endeavour, stands as the fourth center globally recognized in this area of expertise. Accredited by the World Meteorological Organization, the center is instrumental in monitoring dust and sand storms and conducting scientific research to serve the regional countries affected by these environmental phenomena.
The strides made by Saudi Arabia in reducing the frequency and impact of dust and sand storms are a testament to the effectiveness of its environmental policies and initiatives. By prioritizing the health of its environment, the Kingdom is setting a strong example for regional and global peers in terms of sustainable environmental management and preservation.
