Saudi Arabia Leads Arab Environmental Efforts With Key Initiatives And Collaborations
Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley highlighted the Arab region's increasing focus on environmental issues. He emphasised Saudi Arabia's leadership in this area, noting initiatives like the Middle East Green Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance regional cooperation to combat land degradation, protect green spaces, ensure food security, and adapt to climate change.
Alfadley spoke at the 18th meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) in Cairo. He commended CEDARE for its role in fostering collaboration between Arab and European regions. The meeting aimed to improve the centre's operations and efficiency by redefining its goals to address current and future challenges.

The discussions at the meeting also reviewed CEDARE's strategic plans. They assessed its institutional and financial capacity to deliver continuous programs. Additionally, they explored ways to enhance regional cooperation in circular economy initiatives, supporting sustainable development objectives.
Alfadley also noted the Arab region's efforts in addressing global environmental challenges. Egypt hosted COP27 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2022, followed by the UAE hosting COP28 in 2023. Saudi Arabia hosted COP16 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and announced the establishment of the Global Water Organization in Riyadh.
These events collectively demonstrate the Arab region's commitment to environmental conservation. Alfadley concluded his remarks by reaffirming Saudi Arabia's dedication to collaborating with environmental stakeholders both regionally and internationally. He stressed their aim to tackle environmental challenges and promote a sustainable future.
