Saudi Arabia's Road Sector Implements Smart Solutions For Safer And Greener Highways
The Kingdom's road sector is experiencing major advancements, with the Roads General Authority spearheading efforts to enhance safety and sustainability. These initiatives are designed to bolster the Kingdom's status as a global logistics hub. One key development is the introduction of roller-compacted concrete for truck lanes, marking a first for the Kingdom. This material offers exceptional durability, effectively handling heavy traffic and resisting deformation from large trucks.
In line with environmental goals, the authority is incorporating recycled building demolition waste into asphalt mixes. This approach reduces dependency on natural resources and transforms waste into valuable construction materials. The target is to recycle 60% of such waste, promoting a circular economy. Additionally, flexible rubber asphalt made from recycled tires is being used in pedestrian paths and parks, providing a comfortable surface while reducing tire waste pollution.

Another significant innovation is road cooling technology, which utilises locally produced materials to reflect sunlight. This method can decrease road surface temperatures by 12 to 15 degrees Celsius on average. It creates a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and helps mitigate the urban heat island effect. Such technologies are part of broader efforts to improve public spaces and urban environments.
The Roads General Authority's strategy also focuses on enhancing road quality and safety across the Kingdom's extensive 73,000-kilometer network. This network is among the most interconnected globally, supporting vital sectors and fostering economic growth. By implementing these pioneering measures, the authority aims to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency in logistics operations.
Efforts to improve public spaces include using flexible rubber asphalt in pedestrian areas. This material not only provides comfort but also addresses pollution from tire waste. The authority's commitment extends to creating sustainable urban environments through innovative solutions that benefit both residents and the ecosystem.
The implementation of these advancements reflects a comprehensive approach to modernising infrastructure while prioritising environmental responsibility. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, the Kingdom aims to set new standards in road management and logistics efficiency.
These developments underscore a commitment to transforming the Kingdom into a leading logistics hub while ensuring environmental sustainability. Through strategic innovations, the Roads General Authority is paving the way for a more efficient and eco-friendly future in transportation infrastructure.
