Saudi Arabia's Road Sector Implements Smart Solutions For Safer And Greener Highways

The Kingdom's road sector is experiencing major advancements, with the Roads General Authority spearheading efforts to enhance safety and sustainability. These initiatives are designed to bolster the Kingdom's status as a global logistics hub. One key development is the introduction of roller-compacted concrete for truck lanes, marking a first for the Kingdom. This material offers exceptional durability, effectively handling heavy traffic and resisting deformation from large trucks.

In line with environmental goals, the authority is incorporating recycled building demolition waste into asphalt mixes. This approach reduces dependency on natural resources and transforms waste into valuable construction materials. The target is to recycle 60% of such waste, promoting a circular economy. This method can decrease road surface temperatures by 12 to 15 degrees Celsius on average. It creates a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and helps mitigate the urban heat island effect.
