Saudi Arabia's Road Network Achieves Global Recognition For Sustainability And Quality
Saudi Arabia has made significant advancements in its road sector, achieving the top spot globally in the Road Connectivity Index as per the World Economic Forum. The Kingdom's road infrastructure quality has improved to a rating of 5.7, placing it fourth among G20 nations. This progress positions Saudi Arabia to reach sixth place globally in the Road Quality Index, aligning with efforts to enhance life quality and support strategic sector goals.
The Kingdom's achievements extend beyond urban areas, with notable improvements in out-of-city roads. Saudi Arabia leads the Arab world in rumble strip technology application. According to iRAP, over 80% of these roads met top safety standards by the end of 2024. These successes are attributed to initiatives by the Transport General Authority (TGA), which have significantly enhanced road infrastructure quality through adherence to global design and maintenance standards.

The TGA has adopted advanced technologies, including a large AI-powered road scanning and assessment fleet. This fleet is equipped with state-of-the-art tools for detecting road damage and measuring various parameters like skid resistance and pavement thickness. These capabilities allow for precise analysis, improved maintenance, and real-time decision-making.
Safety measures have been widely implemented across the network, contributing to a 57% reduction in road traffic fatalities according to statistics from the Ministerial Committee for Traffic Safety. Enhanced oversight of maintenance projects has increased traffic detour compliance rates to 95%. The TGA emphasized that these advancements have bolstered road safety significantly.
The TGA is committed to continuing vital road projects aiming for sixth place globally in road quality by 2030. It also seeks to reduce road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people and ensure full safety coverage based on iRAP classifications. These objectives align with delivering advanced services under Saudi Vision 2030.
Saudi Arabia's focus on improving its road infrastructure reflects its dedication to enhancing citizens' quality of life while supporting strategic objectives within the transport sector. By maintaining high safety standards and adopting cutting-edge technologies, the Kingdom aims to secure its position as a leader in global road quality rankings.
