Saudi Arabia's Road Authority Reports Continuous Success In Environmental Conservation Efforts

Saudi Arabia is hosting its inaugural Road Safety and Sustainability Conference and Exhibition from November 3 to 4. The event, themed "Innovating for Tomorrow," is organised by the Roads General Authority in collaboration with the International Road Federation. This initiative highlights Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to environmental conservation within its road network operations.

The Saudi Highway Code includes comprehensive environment codes that guide the assessment, mitigation, and monitoring of environmental impacts throughout all stages of road projects. These stages encompass concept, planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. The codes ensure compliance with relevant Saudi regulations.

Road Authority Highlights Environmental Success

The authority has embraced various studies and scientific innovations aimed at enhancing environmental conservation. These efforts not only improve quality of life but also bolster safety and align with the strategic goals of the road sector. One such innovation involves using locally produced road cooling materials that absorb less solar radiation.

This approach helps mitigate the heat island effect, which can lead to increased energy consumption and air pollution. Additionally, construction and demolition waste have been incorporated into asphalt mixes. Recycled rubber from tires is also utilised alongside reused milled asphalt.

A recent trial launched by the authority involves advanced equipment for on-site recycling of asphalt layers through Full Depth Reclamation (FDR). This cold in-place recycling technique significantly reduces costs by 40-70% compared to traditional methods while minimising traffic disruptions.

FDR also lowers carbon emissions, conserves raw materials, and reuses up to 100% of existing site materials. Moreover, it shortens project duration by over 40%, demonstrating a commitment to achieving high environmental sustainability standards.

These initiatives reflect a dedication to providing a safer and more comfortable environment for road users across the Kingdom. By integrating innovative practices into road projects, Saudi Arabia continues to make strides in environmental conservation.
