Saudi Arabia Enhances Global Renewable Energy Leadership With Green Hydrogen Agreements To Europe
ACWA Power, in the presence of Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, has signed agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with international partners. These agreements aim to establish a green hydrogen and renewable energy export chain between Saudi Arabia and Europe. This initiative highlights Saudi Arabia's strategic role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project.
The Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Export Workshop, led by ACWA Power under the Ministry of Energy's supervision, facilitated these signings. The event gathered high-level officials from Saudi Arabia, Greece, France, and Germany, along with executives from global companies and national institutions. It showcased Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its energy mix and promote clean energy integration regionally and internationally.

A joint development agreement was reached with German partner EnBW for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub's first phase. This facility is expected to be operational by 2030. It will feature its own renewable electricity generation, desalination plants for hydrogen electrolysis, ammonia conversion facilities, and an export terminal. The project capitalises on Saudi Arabia’s ability to produce renewable energy at competitive rates.
ACWA Power also signed MoUs with European companies like Edison S.p.A., TotalEnergies Renewables SAS, Zhero Europe B.V., and EnBW. These agreements focus on exporting renewable electricity from Saudi Arabia to Europe while assessing commercial potential and market trends for sustainable energy solutions.
Additional MoUs were signed to enhance relationships with key players in electricity corridor development. Partners include CESI (Italy), Prysmian (Italy), GE Vernova, Siemens Energy (Germany), and Hitachi (France). These collaborations aim to develop advanced energy transmission corridors that improve supply reliability and cross-border infrastructure efficiency.
The workshop highlighted Saudi Arabia’s competitive advantages in the IMEC project due to its strategic location connecting East and West. The Kingdom's leadership in enhancing global logistics connectivity was evident through these agreements.
Vision 2030 Alignment
The agreements reflect Saudi Arabia's commitment to global energy security and regional interconnection projects. They align with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting a sustainable energy future. The Kingdom’s role as a reliable global supplier is reinforced through these initiatives.
This collaboration underscores the Kingdom’s pivotal participation in IMEC’s success. By driving the transition toward sustainable energy solutions, Saudi Arabia continues to play a leading role in advancing regional integration projects.
