Saudi Arabia Achieves UNESCO Recognition For Semsemiah Instrument As Intangible Cultural Heritage

Saudi Arabia has successfully registered the "Crafting and Playing of the Semsemiah Instrument" on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This achievement was announced by Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, who also chairs the Heritage Commission and leads the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science. The nomination was spearheaded by Egypt, with significant input from Saudi Arabia.

The Semsemiah instrument holds a vital place in traditional arts, especially in coastal regions where it is played during social events like weddings and local festivals. It accompanies traditional songs that tell stories about maritime heritage and social life. This instrument is deeply connected to the artistic identity of these communities.

The skill of playing the Semsemiah is passed down through generations, symbolising a blend of heritage and innovation in Saudi art. It serves as a cultural bridge, maintaining its relevance across different eras. The registration adds to Saudi Arabia's growing list of cultural elements recognised by UNESCO.

Other Saudi cultural components on UNESCO's list include Majlis, Arabic coffee, the Saudi Alardah dance, Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, Saqqar (Falconry), date palm cultivation, traditional weaving of Al Sadu, Arabic calligraphy, Alheda'a (oral traditions for calling camel flocks), Khawlani coffee beans, Harees dish, and metal engraving arts.

This recognition was achieved through collaboration between the Heritage Commission and other entities like the Saudi National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science. The Kingdom's permanent delegation to UNESCO also played a crucial role in this process. Such efforts highlight the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage.

The Semsemiah instrument not only enriches social gatherings but also strengthens community bonds through shared musical experiences. Its inclusion in UNESCO's list underscores its significance in preserving cultural diversity and promoting global awareness of unique traditions.
