Saudi Arabia Initiates Rainwater Harvesting For Rehabilitating Degraded Land
In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) has embarked on an ambitious initiative to rehabilitate 620,000 hectares of degraded land across Saudi Arabia. This extensive project aims to harness rainwater harvesting techniques to bolster vegetation cover in nine distinct regions within the nation, marking a pivotal step in combating desertification and aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 for sustainable development and environmental protection.
The initiative will explore the viability of executing rehabilitation projects across three principal climatic zones: continental, coastal, and mountainous. This involves pinpointing target areas, selecting suitable rainwater harvesting methods, and determining the specific activities to be undertaken in each region. To achieve these goals, NCVC will undertake a meticulous collection of climate and hydrological data, analyze topographic and survey maps, and utilize satellite imagery. Fieldwork will also be a crucial component, with teams set to collect soil and water samples, conduct field measurements and laboratory analyses, and map out the drainage network of the main basins within the study locales.

The project is poised to deliver several key outcomes. These include identifying the primary causes and extent of land degradation, cataloging existing plant species along with their populations, and recommending suitable plant types for restoration alongside their optimal propagation techniques. Additionally, it will estimate the seed or seedling requirements for designated areas, identify optimal planting periods, establish a desired balance between plants unsuitable for grazing and those that are, and ascertain rainfall patterns, water requirements, and target areas for cultivation. Crucially, it will also determine the most effective rainwater harvesting systems for each site.
Rainwater Harvesting Techniques
Rainwater harvesting will play a central role in this project. This technique involves collecting and storing rainwater for future use, employing various methods such as dams, reservoirs, cisterns, and wells. By leveraging these techniques, the project aims to significantly improve vegetation cover in the targeted regions, thereby contributing to the broader goals of environmental sustainability and desertification combat in Saudi Arabia.
