Saudi Arabia Railways Records Over 13 Million Passengers And Significant Freight Growth In 2024

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) achieved remarkable milestones in 2024, transporting over 13 million passengers. This marked a 22% increase compared to the previous year. Freight operations also experienced growth, with more than 28 million tons of goods and minerals moved, reflecting a 15% rise. These accomplishments highlight SAR's significant role in advancing the Kingdom's railway sector and boosting the national economy.

Passenger train services expanded significantly, with a 19% increase in operations. More than 35,000 trips were recorded as more people chose safe and efficient rail travel. During the 1445 AH Hajj season, the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line transported over two million pilgrims. This eased road congestion and enhanced the pilgrimage experience.

SAR's freight operations contributed to sustainability by diverting over two million truck trips from roads. This shift saved more than 113 million liters of fuel and reduced carbon emissions. It also improved road conditions, aligning with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy’s environmental goals.

A notable achievement in 2024 was the launch of the Dream of the Desert train. This luxury rail experience is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), enhancing Saudi Arabia's position in high-end tourism. Additionally, SAR inaugurated a new freight rail route outside urban areas in Al-Ahsa to improve traffic safety and streamline railway operations.

SAR secured six international certifications for quality and safety, reaffirming its commitment to high operational standards. The company also launched a nationwide railway safety awareness campaign to educate people about railway hazards and protecting public and private property.

Strategic partnerships were strengthened through 63 contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding with various entities. These collaborations aim to enhance SAR's capabilities and expand its influence within the industry.

SAR's achievements underscore its pivotal role in advancing Saudi Arabia's railway sector while supporting economic growth. The company's initiatives align with national strategies for sustainability, safety, and tourism development.
