SAR Achieves Significant Passenger And Cargo Growth In First Half Of 2024
Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) reported that over 5.1 million passengers used its trains in the first half of 2024, marking a 17% rise from the same period last year. Additionally, SAR recorded a 5% increase in trips on its network, totalling 17,200 journeys via the Eastern Train, Northern Train, and Haramain High-Speed Train networks.
The volume of minerals and goods transported through SAR's network surpassed 13.26 million tons in the first half of this year, reflecting a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This achievement has helped avoid over one million vehicle trips on Saudi highways, enhancing traffic safety, preserving road infrastructure, and significantly reducing carbon emissions in line with national goals.

SAR CEO Dr. Bashar bin Khalid Al-Malik highlighted the accomplishments during the Hajj season 1445 AH. He credited these successes to unwavering support from Saudi leadership and continuous company efforts. These efforts align with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services and Vision 2030 objectives.
In the first half of the year, SAR signed several strategic agreements and memoranda of understanding to enhance railway transportation. Among these is a contract to purchase ten modern trains for the Eastern Railway Network to improve travellers’ experiences and meet national targets.
SAR also signed two memoranda of understanding with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON). These agreements aim to link the logistics zone in Dammam's second industrial city to the railway network, facilitating access to various ports and enabling industrial sector connections to local, regional, and global markets.
Dr. Al-Malik also mentioned plans for launching the first luxury train service in the Middle East and North Africa by late 2025. This initiative demonstrates SAR's commitment to enhancing transportation services across the region.
