New Railway Law Passed In Saudi Arabia With Strict Penalties For Violators

In a significant move to enhance the railway sector within the Kingdom, Saudi Arabia's Cabinet has officially sanctioned new regulations to uphold highest standards of safety. This strategic initiative aims to align with the objectives of the National Transport & Logistics Strategy, fostering a well-governed relationship among infrastructure owners, operators, and users.

The introduction of these regulations is set to elevate the standards of railway service providers, focusing on safety, quality, and fostering a competitive environment through fair policies and legislation. This development follows a notable surge in railway usage within the Kingdom, with passenger numbers reaching 11.2 million in 2023, marking a 55% increase from the previous year. Additionally, the railways played a crucial role in transporting 24.7 million tons of goods and minerals, reflecting a 6% growth.

Saudi's Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser highlighted the regulations' role in promoting the utilisation of railways, safeguarding infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with internationally recognised standards. Additionally, the legislation introduces penalties aimed at protecting railway tracks from unauthorised access and damage. The minister extended his gratitude towards Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman for their endorsement of the new law, which paves the way for a more robust and efficient railway sector in Saudi Arabia.
