Saudi Arabia Elected To Lead International Coral Reef Initiative For Upcoming Term

Saudi Arabia has been chosen to lead the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) for its 14th term, beginning in 2025. This decision was made during ICRI's 38th general meeting, which took place from September 9 to 12, 2024, in Jeddah. The selection highlights Saudi Arabia's recognised technical expertise and dedication to coral reef conservation.

The Chief Executive Officer of the General Organization for Conservation of Coral Reefs & Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS), Khalid Asfahani, stated, "Saudi Arabia's selection for the presidency underscores the member countries' recognition of its high technical capabilities and efforts in coral reef conservation. This appointment reflects the global confidence in Saudi Arabia’s ability to host significant international events."

Saudi Arabia Takes Leadership in Coral Reef Conservation

Asfahani emphasised that leading ICRI will enhance Saudi Arabia's commitment to protecting marine environments and preserving biodiversity and ecosystems. This leadership role also highlights the kingdom’s pioneering efforts in coral reef conservation at local, regional, and international levels. Saudi Arabia aims to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure a successful term that advances coral reef conservation globally.

The presidency is expected to elevate Saudi Arabia's status as a key global destination for coral reef and ecosystem conservation. Asfahani mentioned that Saudi Arabia has outlined a three-year roadmap for the initiative. This plan aims to strengthen international cooperation and accelerate efforts to preserve these vital ecosystems during its presidency.

Saudi Arabia joined ICRI in 2022, becoming part of an organisation that includes 45 member countries and covers 75% of the world’s coral reefs. During its upcoming presidency, Saudi Arabia plans to enhance international collaboration and expedite efforts for ecosystem preservation. Asfahani acknowledged the contributions of the United States government, which chaired the initiative's 13th term.

This new role not only reinforces Saudi Arabia’s dedication to environmental protection but also showcases its capability to host major international events. By leading ICRI, Saudi Arabia is set to play a crucial role in advancing global efforts for coral reef conservation.
