Saudi Arabia Allocates $2.5 Billion To Boost Middle East Green Initiative
In a significant move towards environmental stewardship, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Member, and Envoy for Climate Affairs Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir has underscored Saudi Arabia's dedication to combating climate change. During his speech at the first National Greening Forum in Riyadh, Al-Jubeir highlighted the Kingdom's substantial contribution of $2.5 billion to the Secretariat of the Middle East Green Initiative. This initiative, now the largest of its kind globally, has seen a wide array of countries joining and endorsing its charter, with more expressing interest in becoming part of this environmental endeavor.
The forum, which spanned two days, was a gathering point for environmental experts and organizations from local, regional, and international backgrounds. It was organized by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification. Al-Jubeir's participation in a panel discussion titled "Saudi Arabia's Efforts in Climate Change" shed light on the Kingdom's strategic approach to afforestation and land rehabilitation as key measures against climate change. These efforts are in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming for a sustainable future.

Al-Jubeir reiterated Saudi Arabia's role as a global leader in oil production and its consequent responsibility towards the climate. The Kingdom is not only committed to adhering to international standards but also aims to be at the forefront of shaping these standards. The minister emphasized the critical role of afforestation and land rehabilitation in enhancing life quality, ensuring security and stability, and addressing economic challenges posed by climate change.
Highlighting the interconnectedness of global events and their impact on Saudi Arabia and vice versa, Al-Jubeir pointed out that clean air and a healthy environment are fundamental for global well-being. He also touched upon how climate change-induced disasters like floods can disrupt economies by affecting commodity prices and supply chains.
The Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives, championed by His Royal Highness Crown Prince, were also a focal point of Al-Jubeir's address. These initiatives aim to harness the Kingdom's capabilities in promoting a circular carbon economy, combating desertification, enhancing land rehabilitation efforts, increasing tree planting activities, and reducing carbon emissions across the region.
Al-Jubeir's remarks at the National Greening Forum underscore Saudi Arabia's proactive stance on environmental protection and climate change mitigation. Through its leadership in such initiatives, the Kingdom is setting a precedent for regional and global efforts towards a more sustainable future.
