Saudi Arabia Pavilion Becomes First International Pavilion To Earn WELL Health-Safety Rating At Expo 2025 Osaka
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka has achieved the WELL Health-Safety Rating, distinguishing it as the sole international pavilion to receive this certification so far. This accolade was presented during a ceremony at the Saudi Pavilion, where Saudi Ambassador to Japan and Commissioner General of the Saudi Pavilion Dr. Ghazi Binzagr received the certificate from Jack Noonan, Senior Vice President of the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).
Dr. Binzagr expressed that obtaining the WELL certification signifies the pavilion's dedication to sustainable design and operational excellence. He highlighted that adhering to WELL Building standards not only supports staff health but also enhances visitor experiences by prioritising well-being. The Health-Safety Rating is part of the broader WELL certification, which is a globally acknowledged standard aimed at promoting health and well-being in constructed environments.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the pavilion draws inspiration from traditional Saudi villages and incorporates various sustainability elements. These include renewable energy sources, low-carbon materials, and a lightweight façade with stone panels that can be easily disassembled, all contributing to reduced environmental impact. This design aligns with international standards for temporary structures by focusing on occupant health in areas such as air quality, water quality, nutrition, lighting, physical fitness, comfort, and mental health.
The WELL Health-Safety Rating is grounded in research aimed at enhancing human health through design interventions, operational protocols, and policies that cultivate a culture of well-being. This system creates environments that promote health, happiness, and productivity. Managed by IWBI, it ensures independent evaluation and verification of these standards.
This certification underscores the pavilion's commitment to integrating sustainable practices while maintaining high standards for visitor and staff well-being. By achieving this rating, the pavilion sets a benchmark for other international pavilions in terms of health-focused design and operations.
