Saudi Arabia Concludes Participation In COPUOS, Emphasises Space Sustainability And Global Cooperation
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has wrapped up its involvement in the 68th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) at the Vienna International Center. The delegation from Saudi Arabia included members from the Saudi Space Agency (SSA), the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office.
Eng. Muryah Alshahrani led the Saudi delegation. During the opening session, he emphasised Saudi Arabia's dedication to fostering international collaboration in space activities. He pointed out that joint efforts and knowledge sharing are crucial for ensuring outer space is used peacefully, responsibly, and sustainably. This approach supports comprehensive development and benefits humanity's future.

The SSA organised a side event and workshop titled "Toward a Cleaner Orbit: Advancing Global Cooperation on Space Debris." This event highlighted Saudi Arabia’s initiatives to safeguard orbital environments from debris. Additionally, they announced plans for a Space Debris Conference in 2026. The SSA also introduced various awareness campaigns aimed at increasing public understanding of space and sustainability issues.
During their participation, the Saudi delegation engaged in several bilateral meetings with representatives from other space agencies and member states. These discussions focused on exploring opportunities for cooperation and shared interests, which contribute to expanding international partnerships and enhancing Saudi Arabia's presence in the space sector.
This involvement underscores Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to play an active role in shaping the future of space exploration. It aligns with their commitment to peaceful use and sustainable development principles, as outlined in the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
