Saudi Arabia Takes Leading Role In Advancing The UN Integrated Geospatial Information Framework

The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) in Saudi Arabia recently hosted seminars and workshops focusing on geospatial law and the UN Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF). These sessions featured international experts from the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Management (UN-GGIM), who shared insights on various aspects of geospatial data management, including legal issues like location privacy and liability.

Kevin Pomfret, a UN-GGIM member, highlighted the importance of the second strategic pathway of the UN-IGIF. He described it as a valuable tool for identifying gaps in existing laws and policies that support data integration and exchange. Pomfret noted Saudi Arabia's leadership in implementing this framework, emphasizing its role in enhancing geospatial information value.

During discussions, Pomfret explained how the second strategic pathway could guide necessary legal changes to address emerging technologies such as geospatial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. He mentioned that many legal concerns raised by participants mirror challenges faced globally by geospatial professionals.

On the second day, experts Tim Trainor, Dr. Lesley Arnold, and Pomfret outlined their presentation goals. They aimed to raise awareness among participants from various sectors about the nine strategic pathways of the UN-IGIF. Their focus was on successful geospatial information management within Saudi Arabia.

The experts also explored current integration status and future potential for geospatial data within the UN-IGIF. They discussed challenges and opportunities related to achieving this vision at a national level, particularly in Saudi Arabia. Emphasizing governance and cooperation was crucial to advancing this framework's vision.

The seminars served as a significant event for promoting the UN-IGIF vision within GEOSA. They provided a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and exchanging ideas among over 100 specialists from 50 different sectors, including governmental, academic, private, and nonprofit organizations.

High-Level Meeting in Jeddah

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia hosted the fifth meeting of the high-level team for the UN-GGIM Integrated Geospatial Information Framework in Jeddah. This gathering aimed to oversee global implementation of this framework while offering strategic leadership and resources for its continuous development.

This meeting marked its first occurrence in the Arab region with 47 participants from various countries attending. These included representatives from member states in the UN-GGIM Committee of Experts alongside chairpersons of technical working groups and international specialists.

Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia hosted a meeting for the committee of UNGGIM-Arab States. The Kingdom holds both presidency and general secretariat roles within this committee.

The discussions underscored geospatial data's significance in decision-making processes and its contribution to sustainable development efforts worldwide. The events highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing geospatial information frameworks both nationally and internationally.
