Saudi Arabia Proposes International Search And Rescue Day To Enhance Global Efforts

Saudi Arabia is enhancing its global leadership in search and rescue operations. Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Duailej, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), proposed September 10 as "International Search and Rescue Day." He also announced a $200,000 donation from the Kingdom to support this initiative. This announcement was made during the 71st meeting of the International Satellite Search and Rescue Programme (COSPAS-SARSAT) in Riyadh.

The COSPAS-SARSAT meeting, held from October 15 to 24, marks the first time it has been hosted outside its founding countries: the US, France, Russia, and Canada. The event includes participants from 45 countries and organizations. Henrik Smith chairs the meeting as the current chairman of the COSPAS-SARSAT Program Council. Saudi Arabia's involvement in global search and rescue efforts has been significant since joining the program in 2000.

Saudi Arabia Leads in Search and Rescue Initiatives

Saudi Arabia has developed advanced search and rescue capabilities, establishing the Saudi Center for Search and Rescue Missions in Jeddah. This center acts as a regional hub supporting operations in seven neighboring countries: Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Syria, and Yemen. The Kingdom's commitment to these efforts underscores its dedication to enhancing regional safety.

The Kingdom is committed to the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System and Autonomous Distress Tracking technology. These initiatives ensure full regulatory compliance by aircraft operators and rescue coordination centers. Saudi Arabia is also embracing technological advancements like drones to improve aviation safety and efficiency.

Al-Duailej announced that Saudi Arabia will host the Central and Southern Regions Meeting in Jeddah from February 24 to 27, 2025. This event will provide specialized training workshops aimed at strengthening search and rescue personnel's capabilities across the region. Such initiatives are part of Saudi Arabia's broader strategy to enhance its role in international civil aviation safety.

The Kingdom's active participation in satellite-based search and rescue efforts further cements its status as a key player on the international stage. Al-Duailej emphasized increased cooperation among all participants to create a safer future for civil aviation worldwide.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is solidifying its position as a global leader in search and rescue operations," said Al-Duailej during his opening speech at the COSPAS-SARSAT meeting.
