Saudi Arabia Hosts GAIN Summit, Reinforcing Its Leadership In Global AI Innovation

The President of the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, highlighted the significance of the Global AI Summit (GAIN Summit) in its third edition. He noted that it aligns with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud's vision to establish Saudi Arabia as a leader in artificial intelligence, supporting the Kingdom Vision 2030.

Dr. Al-Ghamdi emphasized that since its inception in 2019, SDAIA has aimed to keep pace with leading nations in data and AI fields. The authority's goal is to strengthen Saudi Arabia's position among economies driven by advanced technologies. This commitment includes hosting the first Global Artificial Intelligence Summit in 2020, where the National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence was introduced.

Saudi Leads in AI with GAIN Summit

He also mentioned the launch of the International Artathon competition at the first summit. This competition explored AI's potential in creating poetry, novels, and other human-related content, with participation from numerous countries worldwide.

The upcoming Global AI Summit will feature over 456 speakers from more than 100 countries, enriching discussions across 150 sessions. The event has attracted over 32,000 registrants and will debut more than 25 local and international initiatives. Additionally, it will involve signing over 70 agreements and memoranda of understanding.

Al-Ghamdi stated that SDAIA organized the second edition of the summit in 2022, which focused on generative AI advancements. This led to significant developments anticipated for the 2024 summit, which will address contemporary AI realities, future developments, and ethical commitments.

AI Ethics and Governance

Dr. Al-Ghamdi stressed the importance of regulations and ethics for AI use. He noted that Saudi Arabia was among the first countries to adopt UNESCO's AI ethics recommendations in November 2021. During the second Global AI Summit in 2022, Saudi Arabia issued principles aimed at promoting responsible AI use.

The Kingdom established the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh, granted UNESCO Category II status in 2023. This centre aims to raise awareness about responsible AI use and direct its optimal application.

Economic Impact of AI

The Director of the National Information Center, Dr. Esam Al-Wagait, discussed AI's rapid growth and its transformative impact on various fields. He cited forecasts indicating that AI could contribute approximately $15 trillion to the global economy by decade's end.

Dr. Al-Wagait reviewed economic reports from global consulting firms like McKinsey and Deloitte. These reports highlighted how organizations using AI for data analysis reduced operational expenses by up to 25%, while robotic process automation improved efficiency by up to 30%.

AI in Urban Life

Dr. Al-Wagait also touched upon AI's role in enhancing urban life quality. A Bloomberg survey revealed that around 69% of cities aim to leverage generative AI for improvements such as optimal energy use and traffic management.

SDAIA launched a Center of Excellence for congestion solutions using data and AI earlier this year to enhance traffic safety and address congestion issues within Saudi Arabia.

AI in Healthcare

In healthcare, Dr. Al-Wagait highlighted significant global growth in using AI-based medical equipment for diagnostics and surgical procedures. He referred to US FDA data showing approval of 950 AI-based medical devices as of August this year.

SDAIA has collaborated with the Ministry of Health to launch an AI Center of Excellence in Health aimed at developing solutions for diagnosing chronic diseases like cancer and retinal disorders.

Human-AI Relationship

Regarding human-AI interaction, Dr. Al-Wagait explained that competition among organizations to attract qualified professionals has intensified due to a supply-demand gap. He emphasized that human intelligence remains distinct despite similarities with artificial intelligence.

"Organizations are increasingly focusing on developing their employees' AI skills," he said, noting that this relationship is complementary rather than competitive for humanity's benefit.

Diverse Participation at GAIN Summit

The CEO of the National Center for AI (NCAI) at SDAIA, Yaser Al-Onaizan, confirmed that this year's GAIN Summit stands out due to diverse speaker specializations from academic research fields meeting economic decision-makers from major global companies involved in AI tools production or investment.

This summit underscores advanced technologies' societal significance amid ongoing developments in data and AI technologies affecting all aspects of human life.

Strategic Global Location

Al-Onaizan pointed out Saudi Arabia’s strategic global location makes it a hub for discussing regional issues including those related to artificial intelligence. The summit aims to discover new methods for a better future alongside these technologies while supporting United Nations' sustainable development goals.

The event will also host preparatory activities like Allam Challenge and International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad involving participants from 25 countries along with GAINx event partnered with four Saudi universities: King Saud University; Prince Sultan University; Alfaisal University; Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University. The summit will include an international consultation session on artificial intelligence governance collaborating with United Nations & Islamic World Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (ICESCO).
