Saudi Arabia Hosts Workshop To Combat Antimicrobial Resistance In Veterinary Sector

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step forward in the battle against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by hosting an international workshop in Jeddah. The event, organized by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa), brought together key figures including Weqaa CEO Eng. Ayman Alghamdi and Dr. Ali Al-Sheikhi, Undersecretary for Animal and Fisheries Resources Department at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. Representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and other stakeholders were also in attendance.

The primary focus of the workshop was to deliberate on the GCC's four-year plan (2024-2027) aimed at curbing the spread of AMR in the veterinary sector, employing the One Health Approach. This initiative, spearheaded by the Kingdom, seeks to foster cooperation and align efforts across GCC nations to mitigate this global menace threatening human, animal, and environmental health.

GCC Unites Against Veterinary AMR

During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions to share experiences and insights on combating AMR. The Kingdom's role in leading AMR mitigation efforts among GCC member states was highlighted, alongside the achievements of the national committee on antimicrobial resistance. Furthermore, the workshop explored strategies for creating a roadmap to tackle AMR, including mechanisms to enhance member states' capabilities and facilitate expertise exchange.

The 2024-2027 guiding plan underscores the necessity for long-term sustainability in controlling animal diseases through the prudent use of antibiotics. This strategy aims to diminish infection rates, fatalities, and extended treatment periods by developing comprehensive national policies and multi-sectoral procedures. The concerted effort aligns with the One Health approach, ensuring a unified front against AMR across GCC countries.

This initiative not only demonstrates Saudi Arabia's dedication to combating AMR but also positions the Kingdom as a leader in fostering regional collaboration for health security. The workshop serves as a pivotal platform for GCC countries to unite in this critical fight, marking a proactive step towards safeguarding global health.
