Saudi Arabia's Industrial Leadership Shifts Towards Future Industries With Over 4,000 Smart Factories

The third annual Saudi Forum for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) recently concluded, drawing ministers, experts, and innovators from Saudi Arabia and beyond. Organised by the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Saudi Arabia (C4IR Saudi Arabia), in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), the event focused on advancing future industries.

During a panel titled "Industrial Leadership in the Era of Convergence," Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef announced a strategic shift. He stated that Saudi Arabia's industrial leadership is now prioritising future industries over merely keeping up with global trends. This transformation involves upgrading over 4,000 factories into smart facilities using AI, automation, and 3D printing, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.

Saudi Arabia Advances with Smart Factories

The forum featured 12 panel discussions on integrating drones, satellites, AI, and evolving smart factories. These sessions explored digital twins' role in enhancing production efficiency and examined global best practices in advanced factories. The discussions also addressed localising these practices within the Kingdom to boost industrial growth.

Participants engaged in an interactive virtual metaverse experience led by Dr. Ibrahim AlShunaifi from KACST. This experience highlighted key additive and subtractive manufacturing facilities and smart logistics, showcasing technological advancements in Saudi Arabia's national manufacturing ecosystem.

The forum emphasised youth and technology entrepreneurs' roles in shaping AI's future through innovation. Speakers noted that investing in people is crucial for driving future industries. Discussions highlighted a global shift from physical to knowledge capital, stressing mental well-being and continuous learning as pillars of national competitiveness.

On the sidelines of the forum, a digital platform named "PeerLink" was launched to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This platform aims to connect SMEs through a digital network for knowledge exchange and industrial transformation.

Publications Released

Three publications were released with the World Economic Forum during the event. These include "Deployment Pathways for Advanced Air Mobility — Lessons from Early Implementation in Saudi Arabia," "From Barriers to Breakthroughs: How Peer-to-Peer Learning Can Help SMEs Embrace Digital Transformation," and a joint paper with C4IR India titled "Building Communities for Impact: Lessons from the Centers for the Fourth Industrial Revolution India and Saudi Arabia."

The forum also explored AI's future impact on transportation, industry, healthcare, and quantum technologies' role in enhancing trust and global cybersecurity. The discussions underscored how these technologies could transform various sectors within the Kingdom.

C4IR Saudi Arabia Managing Director Dr. Basma AlBuhairan moderated the panel discussion where Minister Alkhorayef spoke about building new industrial capabilities designed for future technologies. The ministry is developing digital infrastructure, nurturing national talent, and enhancing regulatory environments to attract investment for safe technology adoption.
