Saudi Arabia Inaugurates First Regional Forum On Protected Areas

The National Center for Wildlife in Riyadh has taken a significant step forward in the conservation of nature with the inauguration of the "Hima" Protected Areas Forum and its accompanying exhibition. This landmark event, which runs from April 21 to April 24, was officially opened by Eng. Abdulrahman AlFadli, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and Chairman of the Board of the National Center for Wildlife. Marking a first in the region, the forum has garnered attention from both local and international circles.

The agenda for the forum is packed with insightful presentations and lectures from renowned experts, scientists, and practitioners in the field of protected areas. A key focus is on the essential role these areas play within Saudi Arabia in aligning with the National Environmental Strategy's goals. Among the critical discussions is the ambitious 30x30 goal, aiming to protect 30% of the Kingdom's land and sea by 2030, highlighting a global effort towards conservation.

Saudi Hosts First Protected Areas Forum

Historical perspectives on protected areas within Saudi Arabia, their roots in ancient Arab culture, and the significance of marine protected areas for ecosystem preservation are among the topics. Additionally, workshops will explore community engagement's impact on conservation efforts, alongside the roles of innovation, technology, and ecotourism in enhancing protected areas' value.

Attracting a diverse group of participants, including representatives from various protected areas, educational bodies, major projects, companies, and non-profit organizations, the forum underscores a collective commitment to environmental preservation. Dr. Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, emphasized the forum's alignment with strategic plans to bolster the national system of protected areas. This initiative is part of the broader Saudi Green Initiative aiming to meet a globally recognized target under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

Dr. Qurban highlighted the multifaceted benefits of protected areas, not only for environmental development and biodiversity enrichment but also for their social and economic advantages. These include enhancing food security, creating tourism and employment opportunities, serving as seed banks and food sources, and encouraging significant private sector engagement.

The "Hima" forum serves as a crucial platform for global leaders in protected area management to share knowledge and align actions with established standards. Since its establishment in 2019, the National Center for Wildlife has been pivotal in addressing threats to both terrestrial and marine wildlife. Its mission focuses on wildlife preservation, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem protection through community engagement. The center aims at fostering a flourishing natural environment that supports environmental sustainability while maximizing social and economic benefits.
