Saudi Arabia Launches Inaugural Hackathon To Boost Semiconductor Design Skills Among Students

The inaugural hackathon dedicated to semiconductor integrated circuit design commenced today at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh. This event, known as the "Chipathon," is a collaborative effort between KACST and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), with sponsorship from ALAT, Siemens, and CDT Holding. The initiative aims to boost national expertise in integrated circuit design.

More than 700 students from 31 Saudi universities applied to participate in the Chipathon. Out of these, over 250 students from 25 universities were selected to join the hackathon. The event focuses on enhancing their skills in developing electronic chips, particularly for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Participants will receive intensive training using Siemens tools recognized globally.

Saudi Arabia's First Semiconductor Hackathon Begins

The Chipathon is part of Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to develop national competencies in semiconductor technology. This sector is crucial under Vision 2030, which seeks to position the Kingdom as a leading regional hub for semiconductor technologies. The hackathon supports this vision by fostering local talent and expertise.

During the competition's training phase, 30 participants will be chosen to form 10 teams that advance to the final stage. These teams will work on innovative solutions for real-world chip design challenges presented by ALAT. A panel of judges, including local and international experts in the semiconductor industry, will evaluate their solutions.

KACST has launched several initiatives to localize semiconductor technologies within Saudi Arabia. These include the Saudi Semiconductors Program (SSP), which supports research and development and human resources growth. Additionally, KACST has introduced "Ignition," a program designed to support entrepreneurs and incubate startups in the semiconductor field.

To further bolster the localization efforts, KACST established the National Capabilities Center for Semiconductors in collaboration with KAUST. This center aims to enhance national capabilities in this vital sector. Moreover, a joint master's program in semiconductors was created with Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University and the University of California, Los Angeles.

The Chipathon represents a significant step towards building a pool of skilled engineers and designers specializing in electronic chips within Saudi Arabia. By equipping participants with scientific expertise using internationally compliant design tools, it contributes significantly to achieving Vision 2030's goals.
