Saudi Arabia Joins Ramsar Convention To Strengthen Wetland Conservation Efforts
Saudi Arabia has joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. This move, led by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW), highlights the Kingdom's dedication to preserving its natural habitats and biodiversity. By participating in this global initiative, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance environmental sustainability and bolster its national economy.
The NCW is committed to implementing the Ramsar Convention throughout Saudi Arabia. This involves collaborating with various stakeholders to safeguard the nation's natural resources. The centre's efforts include developing plans, policies, and legislation that support both national and international conservation goals.

Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that host 40% of the world's species and plant life. They play a significant role in storing 30% of global carbon and provide essential resources such as water, food, medicine, and energy. These ecosystems also contribute to agricultural production, climate regulation, and ecotourism.
Dr. Mohammed Qurban, CEO of NCW, emphasised the importance of wetlands by stating, "The conservation of wetlands directly contributes to ecological balance, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development. The Kingdom’s accession to the Ramsar Convention is a strategic step that will enhance both environmental and economic benefits."
The NCW is actively working to identify sites suitable for inclusion in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. Ensuring effective management of these sites is a priority for the centre. This initiative reflects broader efforts to lead comprehensive development plans focused on research, monitoring, and conservation activities.
Wetlands serve as critical stopovers for migratory waterbirds travelling between continents. Their preservation is vital for maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity. As challenges related to water, climate, and biodiversity become more interconnected globally, Saudi Arabia's commitment to wetland conservation becomes increasingly significant.
By joining the Ramsar Convention, Saudi Arabia reinforces its support for global ecosystem preservation efforts in both terrestrial and coastal environments. This step aligns with the Kingdom's broader strategy to address interconnected environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development.
