Saudi Arabia Switches To Clean Diesel, Gasoline For Sustainability Goals
Saudi Arabia is advancing its sustainability agenda with the introduction of clean diesel and Euro-5 compliant gasoline, as announced by the Ministry of Energy. This initiative marks a significant step towards reducing emissions and aligning with the Saudi Vision 2030 sustainability goals. These new fuels are designed to be compatible with all modes of transportation and play a crucial role in environmental preservation.
Euro-5, an emission standard set by the European Union, aims at regulating vehicle emissions. The implementation of these standards in Saudi Arabia underscores the Kingdom's commitment to leading the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in sustainable efforts. This is in line with several initiatives, including the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative.
The Ministry of Energy elaborated that the launch of these eco-friendly fuels is part of Saudi Arabia's broader strategy to minimize emissions and achieve a net-zero target by 2060. This strategy involves adopting the circular carbon economy approach, which emphasizes reducing, reusing, recycling, and removing carbon.
This move is expected to incentivise car manufacturers to bring the latest in energy-efficient vehicle technologies to the Saudi market. It represents a proactive approach to fostering a sustainable automotive sector within the Kingdom.
In related developments, Red Sea Global (RSG) announced in January that it had become the first company in Saudi Arabia to power all its delivery trucks with low-carbon biofuel. This initiative sees the company's fleet transition to electricity or biofuel, setting a precedent in the Kingdom's sustainable practices. Remarkably, the biofuel used by RSG is derived from used cooking oil collected domestically, showcasing an innovative approach to sustainability. This biofuel emits significantly less carbon dioxide—only 0.17 kilograms per liter—compared to the 2.7kg CO2e per liter from conventional diesel, illustrating the potential for substantial emission reductions.
Since the launch of Vision 2030 in 2016, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at fostering a more sustainable future. The Saudi Green Initiative, launched in 2021, is a testament to the Kingdom's comprehensive approach to environmental protection, energy transition, and sustainability. This initiative seeks to mitigate emissions, enhance the use of clean energy, and tackle the challenges of climate change, reaffirming Saudi Arabia's position as a leader in sustainable development in the MENA region.
