Saudi Arabia Celebrates Intangible Cultural Heritage Day Highlighting Yanbaawi Maritime Art From The Red Sea

The Kingdom celebrated the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage on October 17 by honouring Yanbaawi art. This maritime tradition, originating from fishermen's chants, developed in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea ports. Although its exact beginnings are unclear, senior sailors suggest it dates back centuries when known as "Al-Madd" (the tide), sung during evening gatherings by lantern light.

Yanbaawi art narrates the experiences of fishermen at sea. Its melodies are played on the semsemiah and other string instruments, creating a unique blend that links coastal cultures. Performances often start with a mawwal, a traditional song, followed by a dwar, a dance that involves both performers and audience in a shared experience.

Yanbaawi Maritime Art Celebrated in Saudi Arabia

This art form has transcended borders through sea voyages and trade. It spread from Yanbu's coast to Egypt, Yemen, and Jordan, fostering cultural exchanges among communities connected by the sea and shared heritage. This exchange enriched the musical landscape with diverse melodies and rhythms.

Despite modern instruments being introduced into performances today, Yanbaawi remains one of Saudi Arabia's oldest maritime arts. It retains its authenticity while adapting to contemporary influences. Local archives have preserved over 2,000 recordings of this art form, highlighting its cultural importance and the rich heritage passed down through generations.

The celebration of Yanbaawi honours the sailors' journeys and their patience in facing risks at sea. It serves as a living cultural expression that reconnects current generations with their historical roots. This tradition is not just an artistic legacy but also a reminder of each sea's unique melody.
