Saudi Arabia Leads With Initiatives For Ocean Sustainability And Biodiversity At Global Event

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Member, and Climate Affairs Envoy Adel Al-Jubeir participated in the High-Level Event on Ocean Action in San José, Costa Rica, from June 7-8. Leading the Kingdom's delegation, Al-Jubeir's attendance at this event serves as a precursor to the Third UN Ocean Conference, scheduled for June 9-13, 2025, in Nice, France.

The primary objective of the San José event was to facilitate the exchange of expertise on ocean governance and safety while addressing pressing challenges facing oceans. Topics discussed included the global ocean agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Saudi Arabia's Ocean Conservation Efforts

The Saudi delegation showcased various national initiatives under the Blue Saudi banner at the accompanying exhibition. These initiatives aim to enhance ocean sustainability through programs such as assessing and rehabilitating environmental habitats in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The delegation highlighted the importance of preserving the unique biodiversity of these regions for social and economic progress.

Key indicators for monitoring environmental wellbeing include coral reefs, seagrasses, and mangrove trees. Saudi Arabia identifies protected areas, both declared and proposed, as part of its commitment to the 30x30 goal within the Saudi Green Initiative. This goal aims to protect 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.

Among the highlighted national environmental initiatives is an ambitious program to plant 200 million mangrove trees by 2030 and 1.4 billion by 2100. The delegation also presented efforts to tackle plastic pollution at a national level through legislative and regulatory measures, comprehensive waste management planning, and activities promoting behavioural changes.

The establishment of the National Center for Waste Management is a significant step in this direction. The delegation also emphasized Saudi Arabia's commitment to implementing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, demonstrating dedication to conserving and sustainably utilizing biodiversity.

Overall, Saudi Arabia's participation in the High-Level Event on Ocean Action underscores its commitment to addressing global ocean challenges through sustainable practices and international cooperation.
