Saudi Arabia Wins Seat On International Maritime Organization Council For 2026-2027 Term

Saudi Arabia has secured a seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term. The Kingdom received 142 votes from member states during elections in London, UK. The IMO, a United Nations agency, sets global standards for maritime safety, security, and environmental protection.

The Transport General Authority (TGA) emphasized that this achievement is a result of the robust backing from Saudi leadership for the maritime transport sector. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to position the Kingdom as a key player in shaping the future of global maritime activities.

Saudi Arabia Joins IMO Council for 2026-2027

Saudi Arabia's maritime sector holds a prominent position, with its fleet ranking first regionally. The country's ports are continually improving their competitiveness on the global stage. This progress is part of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which seeks to enhance port efficiency and trade flow.

The strategy also focuses on expanding marine tourism through cruise and coastal transport services. Saudi Arabia's strategic location is pivotal, as 13% of global trade passes through the Red Sea.

Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser expressed gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for their unwavering support. He noted that Saudi Arabia's election to the IMO Council reflects international confidence in its capabilities and leadership within the organization.

This election highlights Saudi Arabia's ongoing role in developing international maritime regulations. The Kingdom supports collaborative efforts to safeguard marine environments while enhancing global maritime safety and security.

The TGA stated that this success marks continued progress under Saudi Vision 2030. It underscores Saudi Arabia's influence in shaping future global maritime industry trends.
