Saudi Arabia To Host The Global Research Council Meeting Focusing On AI And Global Collaboration In May 2025

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently hosted a significant meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC) at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). This gathering included the Executive Committee and the International Steering Committee. Dr. Munir bin Mahmoud Al-Desouki, Vice Chairman of the GRC Board of Governors, welcomed participants from around the world, both in person and virtually.

During the meeting, attendees examined Saudi Arabia's preparations for hosting the 13th annual GRC meeting. Scheduled for May 18 to 22, 2025, this event will be held in Riyadh. It marks the first time the MENA region will host such a gathering since the council's inception. The Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA) and KACST will organize it in collaboration with Turkey's Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK).

Saudi Arabia Hosts Global Research Council Meeting

The upcoming meeting will focus on two main themes: "Research Management in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" and "Working Together in Co-Creation to Address Global Challenges." These discussions aim to address pressing issues in today's research landscape. Participants also reviewed future directions for the council and reports from various working groups.

Additionally, mechanisms were discussed to translate the council’s principle statements into actionable plans. These plans will help research councils develop effective policies. Reports from five member regions—Europe, Asia, Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and MENA—were also presented. The council’s role in strategic planning for research funding was another key topic.

Saudi Arabia's hosting of this GRC meeting underscores its significant role in the global scientific community. It highlights efforts by Saudi institutions to support R&D and innovation both regionally and internationally. This event also emphasizes Saudi Arabia's commitment to strengthening cooperation among research councils within the MENA region.

The discussions included an agenda for the Governing Board and a proposal to host its meeting at one of the member councils. This reflects Saudi Arabia’s dedication to fostering collaborative initiatives that align with global strategic goals in R&D and innovation.

The Kingdom’s leadership provides unprecedented support for R&D and innovation sectors. This backing is crucial for advancing knowledge and innovation on a global scale. By hosting such events, Saudi Arabia reinforces its presence on the international stage while contributing significantly to scientific progress.
