Saudi Arabia Hosts The 2025 Asian Physics Olympiad With Participation From 30 Countries
The 25th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) is set to begin on Monday, May 4, 2025, and will continue until May 12 in Saudi Arabia. This event is organised by the Ministry of Education, Mawhiba, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, with exclusive sponsorship from Saudi Aramco. The competition will take place at the university's campus in Dhahran.
Saudi Arabia previously hosted the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad in July 2024 in Riyadh. This event saw participation from 333 students representing 90 countries and was praised for its excellent organisation and competitive environment. The upcoming APhO marks the second international Olympiad hosted by the Kingdom.

This year's Asian Physics Olympiad will see participation from 30 Asian countries, with a total of 240 students competing. The competition consists of two main exams: a theoretical exam and a practical exam, each lasting five hours. These exams adhere to strict scientific standards and are prepared and evaluated by the International Olympiad Committee.
The first Asian Physics Olympiad took place in Indonesia in 1999 with participants from 12 countries. It has since become a significant annual competition for talented high school physics students worldwide. Participation is open to countries that have achieved high rankings in the International Physics Olympiad.
Beyond the scientific challenges, the program includes educational visits, cultural activities, and recreational events. These activities offer participants—students, team leaders, and supervisors—a chance to explore Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage and observe its ongoing development. This provides a comprehensive educational experience.
The selection process for student participants involves their cumulative performance in training forums. Students advance through various preparation levels, culminating in intensive programs at the fourth level with qualifying exams that determine the national team for competition.
Saudi Arabia's Achievements
Saudi Arabia first joined the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2012. Since then, Saudi students have won 16 medals and international awards at this event. Overall, Saudi students have achieved a total of 864 medals and awards in international Olympiads and global competitions. This success highlights Saudi talent's quality and Mawhiba's efforts alongside the Ministry of Education to prepare students for international scientific competitions.
The APhO not only tests academic prowess but also fosters cultural exchange among participants from different nations. As they compete, students gain insights into diverse cultures while showcasing their own country's achievements on an international stage.
