Hajj 2024: 1,301 Deaths Due To Heat Stress, 83% Of These Unauthorized Pilgrims, Says Saudi Minister Of Health

Saudi Arabia has reported 1,301 deaths during the recent Hajj season, according to the country's minister of health. Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel noted that 83% of these deaths were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort. "Among the deceased were several elderly and chronically ill individuals," he added.

The minister emphasized the significant efforts made by authorities to raise awareness about heat stress and preventive measures. He extended his condolences, saying, "May God forgive and have mercy on the deceased. Our heartfelt condolences go to their families. May God accept their deeds and grant them recompense for their suffering."

Al-Jalajel highlighted that the health system addressed numerous cases of heat stress this year, with some individuals still under care. The Hajj season concluded successfully with no recorded outbreaks of epidemics or widespread diseases. The health system provided over 465,000 specialized treatment services, including 141,000 services to unauthorized pilgrims.

In a media interview, Al-Jalajel expressed reassurance about the overall health condition of the pilgrims despite high temperatures in the Holy Sites. He praised the swift response of health authorities and the effective support of Hajj security forces in managing and reducing heat stress effects.

The Kingdom's provision of free health services to pilgrims began even before their arrival, with awareness programs at air, sea, and land border crossings. Approximately 1.3 million preventive services were delivered, including early detection, vaccinations, and medical care upon arrival.Healthcare services included open-heart surgeries, cardiac catheterization, dialysis, and emergency care. Over 30,000 ambulance services were provided, with 95 air ambulance operations ensuring advanced health services delivery in medical cities across the Kingdom. Nearly 6,500 beds and rooms were made available for healthcare needs.

Al-Jalajel stated that all reports had been compiled, families of the deceased notified, and identification completed despite initial lack of personal information or identification documents. Proper processes were followed for identification, burial, and honoring the deceased, with death certificates provided.

Measures to combat heat stress included developing devices that enable rapid and effective rescue of affected individuals. The minister underscored that these efforts significantly contributed to managing health risks during Hajj. The Saudi health system's comprehensive approach ensured that pilgrims received necessary medical attention while mitigating potential health crises.
